UV Curable Separator Coatings

Miltec UV developed a unique patented technology that replaces conventional binders with UV light curable binders and gives Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) manufacturers the ability to deliver enhanced safety at a lower cost. Miltec’s patent on UV ceramic coating applies to all types of LIB separators. Our UV process is an energy-saving process that greatly reduces the drying oven length.  The energy savings due to a shorter drying oven, smaller footprint, and higher line speeds make UV curable separator coatings a significantly lower-cost alternative for separator manufacturers.

  • UV Curable Binder
Mixed with the separator manufacturer’s ceramic slurry.
  • UV Ceramic Coating
The complete ceramic coating including the UV binder and ceramic slurry.
  • UV Curing Lamp Systems

Miltec’s unique binders are compatible with a variety of ceramic fillers and separator materials.
  • PE (Polyethylene)
  • PP (Polypropylene)
  • Layered polyolefins
  • PET (Polyethylene terephthalate)
  • Nonwovens
The binder chemistry is flexible and can be adjusted to meet precise performance specifications for many properties included high porosity and low shrinkage, up to 356°F (180°C). The UV binder is electrochemically stable and has been tested in batteries operating at voltages up to 4.8 V. Independent tests have shown the cycling stability of our UV binder chemistry is equivalent to PVDF.

The Miltec UV Ceramic Coated separators have been verified for the following properties:

  • Low thermal shrinkage at high temperatures
  • Increased melt down temperature
  • Good air permeability (Gurley)
  • High voltage stability
  • Excellent physical and chemical resistance

Patented UV Binder Chemistry Benefits

UV Coating & UV Lamps = Higher Performance Ceramic Separators and Manufacturing at Higher Speeds

  • Improved Fire Safety by reducing shrinkage significantly even at temperatures that close the pores of the base separator film.
  • Higher voltage oxidation resistance
  • Increased battery life
  • Friendly water-based manufacturing technology
  • Compatibility with multiple ceramic fillers
  • Fast Curing (120 m/min with a Miltec UV curing lamp)
  • Ability to coat any separator film, tri-layer, PE, PP, PET, or Cellulose
  • A barrier to dendrite penetration and adds tortuosity to reduce dendrite growth
  • Prevents thermal runaway by allowing the separator to close the pores while maintaining the physical barrier between the cathode and anode
  • Improves long term cycling capacity by scavenging of cathode and electrolyte by-products from amassing on the anode and reducing the battery capacity
  • The UV Ceramic Coating Process is a significantly lower cost than oven drying methods.
